HANDLE WITH CARE- THE MOVE OF GOD- PRESUMPTION IS DANGEROUS
Mishandling the Move of God- A Spirit of Presumption
Psalm 19:13: Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
Quench not the Spirit. Grieve not the Holy Ghost. For the purposes of this short book, there are two points of discussion when thinking of Handling the Move of God or Moves of God with care. There are two ways in which we may mishandle the “Move of God”:Presumption and Good intentions.
A spirit of Presumption in mishandling the Move of God.
The Ark symbolizes God’s presence, Gods glory. Lets look at the story of Uzzah.
In reviewing this story, Uzzah thought it ok to put forth his hand to steady the ark when the Oxen shook it, but that was forbidden by God. Let’s see what further exploration reveals. The free dictionary defines Presumption as; Behavior or attitude that is boldly arrogant or offensive; effrontery. Another definition: The noun presumption pretty much means jumping to conclusions. It is taking something for granted — an idea, an answer, an event …Presumption implies that we take something for granted or that we overstep boundaries…
If we are to understand the idea of presumption here, lets take a brief historical look. The Ark was designed to be carried only by the Levites of the family of Koath. Numbers 4:15- “After Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy furnishings and all the holy articles, and when the camp is ready to move, only then are the Kohathites to come and do the carrying. But they must not touch the holy things or they will die. The Kohathites are to carry those things that are in the tent of meeting.”
The Ark of God had come back from the land of the Philistines 70 years before this event (1 Samuel 7:1-So the men of Kiriath Jearim came and took up the ark of the LORD. They took it to Abinadab’s house on the hill and consecrated Eleazar his son to guard the ark of the LORD.) It had sat in the house of Abinadab, but David and the people wanted to bring the Ark back. The Ark of God represented the presence and the Glory of God.
2 Samuel 6: 3 And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart.4 And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark
Verses 3 and 4 are critical to understanding why Uzzah thought it ok to handle the Ark. It states that the Ark was set upon a new cart, and that the two sons of Abinadab drove the new cart. Uzzah and Ahio may have felt confident because they were from the house of Abinadab and that they drave the new cart. (In making preparation to move the Ark, it had been in the house of Abinadab these many years, 70 Years). Perhaps, there was some “familiarity” with the ark or maybe they didn’t respect the history, but I believe this is where presumption enters. (THERE WERE SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS TO HANDLE THE Ark.)
Sometimes in ignorance we make wrong presumptions about the move of God. Maybe there was insufficient fear of the Lord on Uzzahs part. When we become too familiar with church, we think we understand what Gods move is.
Mishandling the Move of God- Good Intentions
“Uzzah is an example of the inherent dangers in having a zeal for God without knowledge of Gods word and his ways.” When Uzzah steadied the cart, it was a demonstration of good intentions and a zeal but also a careless attitude and no understanding. He meant well, but he did not know or was not instructed by (David) on proper handling of the Ark. Proper handling of the Move of God requires obedience to Gods commands, consecration, humility and sacrifice. Wanting to do what seems right may not be what is right in the eyes of God, especially when it comes to how he wants to move.
God expressly forbid us in his word to touch GODS ANOINTED. God struck Uzzah down because David and the high Priest had not assigned the Levites to carry or handle the ark in accordance with the command of God (Life in the Spirit Bible, 469)
WE SHOULD NEVER PRESUME TO KNOW WHAT Gods move is. HANDLE WITH GREAT CARE THE MOVE OF GOD OR suffer the consequences……….Presumption is very dangerous. ….. We should pray Psalm 19:13: Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression
